Top 7 Foods That Cause Inflammation

Inflammation is one of our body’s ways of fighting injury or infections. Although it’s a natural and normal process, long term inflammation can pose serious health risks. Some of these risks include heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and organ damage. One major cause of inflammation comes from the food you put into your body. Here’s a list of the top inflammation causing foods that you should limit or avoid.

1. Alcohol

Alcohol has numerous effects on our bodies. When we drink too much alcohol, bacteria is allowed to pass more easily through our intestines which lead to inflammation. This effect can be avoided by limiting your alcohol consumption and only drinking in moderation.

2. Oil

Fats and oils are essential for your well-being. However consuming too much omega-6 fatty acids can cause inflammation in your blood vessels. So while you should consume some fats and oils to stay health you should limit your fatty acid intake, especially the omega-6 fatty acids.

3. Sugar

This one shouldn’t come as a surprise. In addition to inflammation, sugar can cause all sorts of other health problems including obesity, anxiety, depression, and diabetes. In fact diabetes is caused from inflammation which leads to insulin resistance.

4. Bread

White breads are quickly converted into sugar by your body. As discussed above, this sugar is a problem and causes your body to respond with inflammation.

5. Gluten

Inflammation is our body’s response to gluten intolerance. However, even if you aren’t gluten intolerant you’ll probably still experience health improvements by removing gluten from your diet. Many people who aren’t gluten intolerant report feeling better after eliminating gluten.

6. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

MSG is a flavor enhancer often found in packaged foods, seasonings, snacks, and fast foods. Animal tests show a variety of health risks. Our bodies don’t know how to process this chemical so our bodies responds through inflammation. It’s best to just avoid this chemical.

7. Meat

Eating too much chicken, pork, beef, and other meats can result in inflammation. This risk is even greater in cured meats because of the sodium and nitrate added to the meat. Try to limit the amount of meat in your diet to avoid inflammation.
